James Maberly
James has been doing art ever since he was a child. He grew up in Zimbabwe and now lives in England. He studied art at the Ipswich School of Art and the Norwich School of Art between 1988 and 1993. Drawing has always been one of his passions.
James is also a sculptor, producing many sculptures over the years. Many of these have been animal sculptures, both domestic and wild animals. He has also produced a series of sculptures which relate to aspects of the life of Christ which have drawn some mixed feelings. Some find them amazing whilst others find them deeply shocking.
After finishing Art College, James was invited to the Suffolk College to teach sculpture which he did for several years. During that time he also taught drawing and 3D design classes.
Over the years, James has been trying to extricate himself from the entanglement of how he felt he should be drawing after years of being taught at art school. It was not an easy task as it required the breaking down of many unnecessary perceptions of how things should be done. It required re-examining his core values and unraveling those which did not help him on his journey.
The result has been that he has now found a freedom to draw as he wishes. He is now able to look at the many other artists in history and around him and feel confident that his drawing is very much his own - a feeling that has been alluding him for many years.
James is keen to pass on some of these ideas and perceptions. Art is an extraordinary means of expression and everyone should feel free to express themselves through drawing.
